Bananas
According to botanical science, a banana is classified as a berry. A fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary with multiple seeds. Although the seeds in commercial bananas are tiny and underdeveloped, the fruit still meets the botanical definition due to its structure and the way it forms.

Fruit
According to Oxford Dictionaries, a fruit is defined as “the sweet and fleshy product of a tree or other plant that contains seeds and can be eaten as food.” Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant.

Onions
Onions form part of the allium family of vegetables and herbs, which also includes chives, garlic, scallions, and leeks. Allium vegetables have been cultivated for centuries and are widely known for their characteristic pungent flavors and medicinal properties. Many archaeologists, botanists, and food historians believe onions originated in central Asia. However, other research suggests onions were first grown in Iran and West Pakistan. It is presumed that wild onions were discovered and eaten very early- long before farming was invented.

Potatoes
The potato was first domesticated in the region of modern-day southern Peru and extreme northwestern Bolivia between 8000 and 5000 BC. It has since spread around the world and become a staple crop in many countries. Following rice, wheat and maize, the potato is the 4th largest food crop in the world. Botanically speaking, potatoes are classified as a vegetable, however, in terms of nutrition, they are classified as starchy food.

Tomatoes
The tomato comes from the Solanum lycopersicum plant, commonly known as a tomato plant. The exact origin of the tomato plant is unknown, although it is speculated that it evolved from the prehistoric plant Nightshade over millions of years ago in South America and slowly moved north until it was domesticated in Mesoamerica between Mexico and northern Costa Rica.

Vegetables
Unlike fruits, vegetables have no scientific definition/value. All parts of herbaceous plants eaten as food by humans are generally considered vegetables.
